The mobile phone is the number ONE technology item that has changed our lives immeasurably. We use the mobile phone for so many things from banking to movie, from tickets to purchasing. Within this podcast I will look at the technology behind mobile phone technology as well as some interesting applications.

What is 5G?

In this episode, I will look at what is 5G? I will look at the frequencies used to transmit 5G discussing what these means for the applications. Then go onto talk about the 3 core uses for 5G. Finally Ill look at some of the more important technologies to be used in 5G to make it different to 4G.

The route to 5G

In this episode, I will look at mobile phone technology over the generations - the route to 5G. From the very first simple mobile phone network that just supported phone calls; to 4G / 5G that is at the heart of our modern lives.

Then a brief look at 6G and do we need it.

The Great 3G Switch Off

3G was designed as the new mobile network for the new millennium. The demand was for a multi-media data network. 2G Edge had squeezed a lot out of an older network design. Now it was time to build a new network, based on improvements to the tried and tested technologies within 2G.

5 Key 5G Technologies

5G is the latest generation of mobile phone technology. In it are a number of new or improved technologies. Here are 5 key 5G technologies: Network Slicing, Beamforming, mmWaves, OFDMA Multiplexing and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing.

Network Slicing

Network slicing is the 5G technology that allows the network to be split into different virtual networks, slices, that provide an end to end virtual network. Each of which can be tailored to the needs of the applications. It is envisaged that some companies would be able to "purchase" their own 5G network and tailor it to their need, in particular in smart factories.

The Mobile Moment

A mobile moment is a point in time and space when someone pulls out their mobile device to get what they want or need – Immediately and in context. This simple action will have some effect be that paying for the tube, purchasing groceries or indeed any action.

5G and Health

5G was introduced in 2020, just at the height of the COVID-2019 pandemic, when many people were panicking about health and vaccines, and social media was rife with scare stories. When 5G was introduced, there was much talk about mm waves being used in the technology, and this led, again in social media, to confusion with microwaves – were we going to be cooked with 5G? Was 5G harmful to our health?

We may have started to use our mobile phones to make phone calls but now these devices are key to our modern society. We use our mobile phones for directions in a strange city; to access our money through our banking and credit card apps; for tickets to travel whether that is bus, train or air; to watch videos; to take images and buy stuff.
