Mobile Messaging - Is SMS still King?

SMS is the first and original (and simple) mobile messaging system. But we have moved on to MMS, iMessage, WhatsApp and now RCS. Do we still need SMS? This podcast talks about these developments and finished with the view that SMS is stil alive and kicking even after 30+ years.

The technology behind mobile phones is based on physics; in particular electro-magnetic waves. In this episode I look at the physics behind mobile phone technology. In particular looking at answering 4 questions:

How far does a wave travel?
What happens when a wave passes from outdoors to indoors?
How do we send 0s and 1s?
How powerful is a mobile signal?

The idea behind this podcast is that we need 100% geographical coverage of mobile phone communication (4G). If this is the case and we can assume that every smart phone will always be connected then we can develop our apps knowing this to be the case.

In this podcast we will look at how we can move to 100% geographical coverage from all 4 UK networks. Then we will move onto look at some simple ideas that will be more useful with this coverage.

Mobile Broadband and FWA

Mobile phone technology is more that the ability to use the mobile phone to communicate. It is also a mechanism to get broadband either at home or business or industrial sites.

In this pocast I'll be talking about how the mobile network can be used to deliver mobile or home broadband. In particular FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) which can be used to deliver the 100Mbps target the UKG have for broadband by the end of 2024.

Mobile Moments

"A mobile moment is a point in time and space when someone pulls out their mobile device to get what they want or need – Immediately and in context."

Using the idea of the mobile momen we can develop our systems to ensure they are mobile friendly. This podcast will look at 5 applications where the mobile moment has been used, or should be used, in developing a system.

We use the mobile phone for all manner of things apart from making phone calls and sending messages We use it for directions, for banking, for tickets, to buy things, to watch videos, to take pictures and many other things. Mobile phone technology is the technology that underpins our use of the mobile phone, and other communication systems.
